Background of the Study: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the voluntary actions taken by businesses to contribute to societal goals, beyond their profit-making objectives, through ethical practices that benefit the community, environment, and stakeholders. In recent years, CSR has evolved into a critical component of corporate strategy, influencing not only public perception but also internal organizational dynamics. Lafarge Africa Plc, one of Nigeria's leading cement manufacturers, has embraced CSR initiatives that focus on environmental sustainability, education, healthcare, and community development. The company’s CSR programs have garnered attention for their impact on both the external community and the internal workforce.
Employee morale, defined as the collective attitude, enthusiasm, and satisfaction of employees within an organization, is heavily influenced by the company's CSR efforts. Employees are more likely to experience a sense of pride and fulfillment when they perceive their employer as socially responsible and committed to improving societal well-being (Akinola & Ajibade, 2024). Research has suggested that CSR can significantly enhance employee morale by fostering a positive organizational culture, improving job satisfaction, and increasing organizational commitment. Employees who feel that their work contributes to the greater good are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and productive.
Despite the growing body of literature on CSR’s impact on employee morale, there remains a gap in understanding how these initiatives specifically influence the workforce at Lafarge Africa Plc, Plateau State. This study aims to investigate the relationship between CSR initiatives implemented by Lafarge Africa Plc and employee morale within the organization, providing insights into how CSR practices contribute to creating a more engaged and satisfied workforce.
Statement of the Problem: Lafarge Africa Plc has implemented various CSR initiatives aimed at fostering community development and environmental sustainability. However, there is limited research on the impact of these CSR programs on employee morale within the company. In particular, while it is assumed that CSR positively influences employee attitudes, there is insufficient empirical evidence linking specific CSR activities to improvements in job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and overall employee engagement at Lafarge Africa Plc, Plateau State. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how CSR initiatives affect employee morale and identifying key factors that contribute to a positive workplace environment.
